Can Skylark is an independent female entertainer, singer/songwriter leaving her infallible mark on South Africa’s entertainment industry. Releasing her independent debut album “PURE” in 2013, her music is play-listed on both national and international radio stations with two number 1 hit singles from the album, “Nothing’s gonna get me down today” and “Everything is cool”. Both singles rose to the number one spot on Heart 104.9 fm’s feature charts, the SA Top Ten and Top 30 respectively. “Nothing’s gonna get me down today” was number 1 for 3 weeks and remained on the chart for a further 21 weeks. It was also featured as the 6th biggest song on the Heart 104.9fm “song of the year” chart for 2013. This was seen as the stepping stone into her amazingly successful career. Since the release of her debut album, Skylark has been progressing as a serious contender in the entertainment industry with attributed successes many can only dream of.

With over 15 years experience in the music industry, and embarking on her solo career, Skylark has since made high profile appearances on numerous magazine, lifestyle and entertainment TV shows, live stages and radio stations across South Africa including Expresso Morning Show, Noot Vir Noot, Morning Live, Afternoon Express, Hectic Nine9, Musiek Roulette, Artscape, CTICC, Baxter Theatre, Heart 104.9FM, Good Hope FM, Khaya FM, Kfm, Jacaranda FM, WRSA FM (USA) and WHUD FM (USA).

She has also worked with well-known musicians including RJ Benjamin, Vicky Sampson, Jimmy Nevis, Keeno Lee, Leslie Kleinsmith, Mike Horne, Lee Gold, Gary Naidoo, Gorm Hjelford and Jon-E. Her performances, attention to detail and passion for entertainment, coupled with her career experience, have left audiences spellbound with every new release by the talented singer.

Skylark’s number 1 single “So High”, is a soulful duet with South African music legend, RJ Benjamin. “So High” was written by Can Skylark and RJ Benjamin, featuring on major stations across South Africa. The song was also performed live by RJ Benjamin and the Top 11 female contestants on the finale of Idols SA in 2014.

Can Skylark’s much anticipated independent EP launch entitled, Overdrive, was hosted at the Roxy Revue Bar at GrandWest Casino and Entertainment World over 3 nights in 2015. The exclusive 3 night event celebrated a new elevated sound from the pop star with more glitz and glam; a new, edgier sound, with an unmistakable essence of Can Skylark that fans have come to love, with star performances by RJ Benjamin, Diggy Bonz and DJ ONQ. This culminated in the release of her sophomore album of the same name – Overdrive in 2015.

Her independently released music videos “Nothing’s gonna get me down today”, “Everything is Cool”, “Moving On” and USA released “Timebomb”, have received over 100 000 views on YouTube.

Earmarked as a career highlight, saw Can travelling to Los Angeles to work with multi-platinum award-winning songwriter, Pam Sheyne, best known for her work with Christina Aguilera’s “Genie in a Bottle”, as well as Cyndi Lauper, Elton John and SA Idols winner, Elvis Blue. The song, Timebomb, is the 4th number 1 single from the talented entertainer. Can Skylark, along with Pam Sheyne and award-winning songwriter and composer Andy Marsh, wrote and recorded the love song in Los Angles. “Timebomb” was engineered by LA engineer, Deyder Cintron, best known for his works on Glee and Rock of Ages. Since its release, “Timebomb” has received the highest rating of 4 stars in an audience compatibility study by an independent auditor, the highest rating ever received in Africa by an artist in 30 years – and the highest rating achieved globally in the last 5 years. Skylark has been well received internationally with her music being playlisted on Billboard radio stations across the USA.

She has since recorded and released a Christmas single in the USA with Primal Sky, “California Christmas”, reaching number 5 on WRSA FM charts. She is now in production for her third album, and is again working with producers from LA; amongst others, Steven Valenzuela (Kelly Clarkson), Deyder Cintron (Gorgio Moroder) and local SA songwriter Emanuel Fereira.

In 2015, Skylark launched her free music skills initiative, The Motive. Founded by Skylark, The Motive is an annual project geared to produce new up and coming artists in showcasing and developing skills for the artists within the entertainment industry. Through a series of hands-on workshops, involving songwriting, branding and marketing, social media management, styling, stage etiquette, studio recording and live performance, The Motive allows free access for undiscovered youth with the opportunity to learn, explore and re-kindle the spirit of music from dedicated industry professionals. The successful launch has seen the selected musicians propel their careers with an understanding of what is required to work in the entertainment business and create a sustainable career. The initiative aims to inspire and educate artists with the tools they require to develop the industry both locally and internationally.
