One of the most hard-hitting rappers to come out of South Africa has released yet another seminal album, appropriately titled ‘Impande’ (the root). Zakwe’s self-titled debut album earned him respect as rapper and became an instant success throughout the country, earning 5 SAMA nominations and winning Best Hip-Hop Album at the MetroFM Awards and Winner at the 1st SA Hip Hop Awards for Best Lyricist
After self-imposed exile as a recording artist Zakwe has come back with more determination and resolve to reclaim his space amongst the biggest rap game changers.
Just like its name, this album is rooted in the hip-hop tradition; it’s unforgivingly rap to its core and Zakwe has proven that he is the real deal in this game and is an emcee that understands the basic tenets of hip-hop – that of story-telling.
Various artists showed some love on this album and established rappers like PRO, Zuluboy, Zola 7, and the new hip-hop sensation, Duncan; even DJ Tira threw in his lot as a rapper.
Roping in The Soil, South Africa’s greatest export, as well as the recently crowned Best Jazz Album winner at the MetroFm Awards, Wanda Baloyi, including the silky soulful voice of another revelation Skye Wanda simply completes this album.
