Siphelele Mnyande (aka Poet The Sonnet, Mr. Blue Murda, The Black Jo Pesch) was born on the 11th of March 1985 in Transkei, South Africa. With his roots buried in the same Muthaland as that of Nelson Mandela, Poet always knew he was born to be different.
Raised in Gonubie, East London, Poet was first introduced to hip-hop at an impressionable age.
The Hip Hop of the 90’s was Poet’s staple, a time characterized by inspirational changes in the industry and true evolution, change that would eventually assist in molding Poet The Sonnet into the artist he is today. It was the rhymes of Nasir Jones (Nas), Tupac Shakur (2pac) and many other greats that would be imperative in educating Poet The Sonnet and what an urban education it was!
It wasn’t long until Poet the sonnet was making his own rhymes and grabbing his first opportunity under F.J Deudney of Crimson Edge (An all white rock band). Poet proved even back then in lowly East London that he was a voice and a rhythmical force to be reckoned with.
As time progressed so did Poet, eventually making the move away from East London in 2006 and into Cap City (Pretoria, South Africa) were his career would begin to flourish. Poet signed to C-Max records on a management deal and began the professional stage of his musical journey.
When it comes to his music, Poet is a perfectionist and for him it’s all about the delivery, “when I make a record, and my words haven’t been heard properly then I fail to see the point of making it in the first place.” it is this belief in quality that forged the cornerstone of the relationship between Poet the Sonnet and Hearstreet Entertainment, launching his career into overdrive and prompting the release of his first full Pre-Album.
Yet an artist of Poets caliber could not simply be satisfied by excelling musically so in 2009 Poet The Sonnet completed his Diploma in Performance Art at Tshwane University of Technology (TUT). Poet believes that studying Performance Art has been more then beneficial to his music career, allowing him to conceptualize his rhymes like a script and assess his own strengths and weakness’s in order to transform himself into an even more electric performer. For these reasons Poet also stands to be a role model to the youths of today, proving that you don’t have to drink and smoke in order to be an urban music artist and most importantly that you don’t have to give up on your education either.
Nowadays Poet looks at his music realistically and hopes not only to conquer Africa (in terms of record sales) but also to introduce his music to the entire world in order to further the growth of a culture, The Culture that is Hip Hop with Poet The Sonnet as it’s first prince, the heir to the crown.
